If you haven't seen it yet, the online book "Getting Real" from collaborative software house 37 Signals is chock full of common sense and not so common rules for getting that app out there where users can play with it. Written specifically to for web application development, many of the ideas are applicable to a project of any flavor.
They're selling it for $19 as a PDF download. They have a couple sample sections you can take a look at for free.
